Scarlet Guard Inn 2017- Post event aftermath!

THL Cynwulf Rendell

Greetings to the Barony of the Rhydderich Hael from your Captain of Archers, Cynwulf Rendell. The Barony should be proud of the Hael Hounds and their excellent efforts at the Scarlet Guard Inn Archery Festival! The Hael had sixteen Hael Hounds, two future Hounds and five Friends of the Hounds at this event!

On Friday evening, Lady Feya started out being the top female shooter using a modern era bow, in the Flight Shoot achieving 165 yards distance.  Hael Yeah! In the Scarlet Guard Challenge, representing the Barony of the Rhydderich Hael, was Lady Thalia and Lord Chebe of the Canton of Beau Fleuve, proudly shooting. As with everything else in life, another archer prevailed. We all should be proud of the effort put forth!
The Scarlet Guard Challengers

In the Kingdom of Aethelmearc Archery Championship ,the Hael Hounds had three participating in the finals, Lady SiobhanLady Thalia, and Lord Theodoric. Two Friends of the Hael Hounds also made the finals, Baron Edward and Lord Snorri. When all the shooting was said and done, another archer prevailed. These archers should be applauded!

Kingdom Champion Shoot!

In court, the Hounds showed their skills and efforts by being called for recognition. Lady Feya was called for her Flight Shoot achievement. THL Milheim was called for his great shot, shooting a two inch bird target at 29 yards on his first shot wit his crossbow. (Note, no actual living bird was damaged during this shoot). Lord Mikus was called up for his great shot, placing an arrow exactly between the eyes of a dragon target, (Note, no actual living dragon was damaged during this shoot). One of the Friends of the Hounds, Lord Martin Lewis was called up as a winner of his range. One the great highlights of court was watching an AOA being awarded to Thalia and Chebe for at least one part of their efforts in Hael Archery. Vivant to Lady Thalia and Lord Chebe!

It should be noted that  Hael Hounds Lady Siobhan, Lady Simmonetta, Lord Chebe and the Friends of the Hael Hounds, Baron Edward, Baroness Anastasie, and Lord Snorri fulfilled their duties as Queen's Guards. In addition to duties, Lady Siobhan, Lady Simmonetta , Lord Robert L'Etourdi and I (Cynwulf Rendell), worked bow inspection for the event. These three individuals made great strides on becoming archery marshals.

After court, it was time to eat and celebrate the day. Our illustrious Baron Magnus, with help, went on a pizza run while the Friends of the Hounds, Baron Edward and Baroness Anastasie BBQ'ed  fourteen lbs of ribs to feed the hounds and cooked additional items too numerous to remember! Thank you and a great Howl to these two!

Lady Simmonetta, Baroness Miriel, Lady Feya and Lord Snorri led the group in relaxing and funny songs. Also, some good stories and some bad jokes were told! Scarlet Guard Inn hit the mark and all went home happy and proud.

Seven Pearls..."Hael" to the Champions!

On the sunny weekend of August 20th Her Excellency and I had the pleasure of attending the first (now annual) Seven Pearls Championships. This year the event was hosted by the Barony of St. Swithin's Bog. Normally the Seven Pearls competitions are held at separate events during the year, but it was decided recently to combine these into a single event. Running an event (let alone a new event) is no easy task. Adding to that was the challenge of running an event the week after Pennsic. It is easy to think such an event could end in disaster, but not so in this case! The Barony of St. Swithin's Bog stepped up to the task and ran a successful, well organized, and fun event.

The event was designed to showcase each competition individually and the Baronage and populace moved from spot to spot to watch each tournament in turn. Normally at events there is so much going on at once it is easy to miss things, but here each tourney was given its own time and spectators did not have to pick and choose what they watched. Not only was this nice for the spectators, but it gave all the champions the full attention they deserved. The pace was relaxed and allowed for a fair amount of pageantry as each champion was processed and heralded into their tournament.

In addition to the tournaments the day was filled with great food, served both list-side and in the hall during lunch. If you went home hungry it was your own fault. The Barony of St. Swithin's Bog also hand crafted banners (pictured upper right) for each of the Barony's that not only served to decorate the list fields but then was presented as gifts to the Barons and Baronesses. The meal was topped off with a wonderful cake that displayed the heraldry of each Barony done in sugar candy. Both elements created such a personal touch to the pageantry of the day and  a great keepsake.

Even with six competitions to complete all the fun was handily wrapped up (even stopping for a lunch break) in time for court. Court was certainly a treat as each of the Seven Baronies held a small court during which each Barony handed out a scroll for one of the tournaments. I think it is safe to say the tradition of this new event will continue on next year as the hosting duty moved to the Barony of Endless Hills. I am disappointed that I will not be on the throne when the event finally makes it way to the Rhydderich Hael (but honestly I am thinking of autocrating).

A personal note to each of our competing champions:

Heavy Weapons: Duke Sir Maynard von dem Steine

Magnus: Your Grace it was truly a pleasure to have you represent the Barony in the heavy weapons tournament. As always you conducted yourself with honor and skill, and your words to us at the end I will always remember. Thanking you for taking time out of your busy weekend to do us proud and congratulations on your victory!

Miriel: What really moved me was seeing the joy on your face as you lined up with us as the champions were herald in for the heavy competition, with each victory on the list your heartfelt bow to his Excellency and I, and true passion and excitement in your eyes as you spoke to us when the tourney was complete. Emotion has always been a big part of my experiences in the society and your journey that day will always be a highlight for me.

Bardic: Lady Brigette de Sainte Mere-Église

Magnus: Lady Brigette your performance was powerful and moving as I knew it would be. You delivered your song with not only skill but with passion, and while I am not a bard I know that is not easy to do in front of a crowd. You did the Barony proud that day!

Miriel: Your song took my breath away! When we spoke about what you should chose to sing and you picked the one you did, I read the words and never realized how they would affect me when performed by you. Thank you for the thought and emotion you gave to us in your performance, you made my heart quake for just a few moments and I will never forget it.

Fencing: Minamoto Roku-i Sakurako

Magnus: Saku I know the day did not go the way you wanted it to but you conducted yourself with honor and grace. You may have not won the day, but you won the hearts of the people. This is the second time I have seen you compete and the second time you received recognition for your talent and dedication. We could not have asked for more in a Champion. Vivat!

Miriel: So much was said to you as the day progressed, so I know you have heard all about your strength and determination. I want to speak about how when your were at a low, all of the people who came to your aid. You shine so brightly and have affected so many, they flocked to see that you were cared for, never forget the reach your spirit has to the people around you, it is seen.

Thrown weapons: THL Eleanore Godwin

Magnus: Eleanore your performance was truly one to behold. Not only did you throw with a high level of skill (tying for second in the tourney) but I could tell you had a great time doing it. Everything about you that day showed your confidence and pride.

Miriel: You joked that You and another thrower were the "oldest" competitors out there, but I think you missed; experience, skilled, dedicated.. etc. I loved watching as you got a good throw and you would swagger to the target knowing that you had thrown your best. You showed how you knew your skill and were never afraid to be proud of it, something I love to see in any female competitor in any martial skill.

Arts & Science: Lord Wolfgang Starcke

Magnus: I was very happy to see your skill as brewer represented in the Arts and Science competition. I know it is an uphill battle for brewers when it comes to finding venues to display your work. You did not disappoint. It was agreed on during the judging that the skill of each competitor made it hard to make a choice. You should be proud, we are.

Miriel: Wolfgang you listened to your crazed Baroness and submitted a beverage, that alone makes you awesome (and it tasted so good to, I need a bottle). I wanted the brewing arts to have a representative and knew you would be the best one to do it.  However there is more, the fact that you drove so far and were right there to set up our thrones before you even thought to set up your own display was not lost to me, you are always there serving before yourself. Thank you!

Archery: Lady Siobhan Readnait

Magnus: Lady Siobhan I know you had a a nervous day but you performed wonderfully. I have a personal connection to the archery part of the Seven Pearls having stumbled into being champion not long ago. I was equally nervous but unlike me you displayed a great level of skill (I'm not sure I hit a single target when I did it). I am proud of you and the Barony should be as well.

Miriel: I knew from the moment you declared yourself as wanting to be our archery Champion you would excel. What I loved the most was you being our champion caused you to push yourself, learn more, and shot harder then you ever have. To see a champion grow because they wanted to do us proud, is something I love to see as a Baroness and hope to see more of in the future. The day of Seven Pearls you had nothing to fear because you had already shown how wonderful a Champion and archer you were. Vivat!

Great job everyone and Hael Yeah!

Another Champion hopeful vying for all but two Champion positions!

A man of many talents Lord Wolfgang Starcke throws his hat into the ring!

"Greetings from Lord Wolfgang Starcke, once and future Iron Man of the Rhydderich Hael. Disturbing word has reached me of a great shortage of contenders for various champion positions in our fine barony. To help remedy this, I offer my services to your Excellencies as rattan champion, rapier champion, thrown weapons champion, archery champion and Arts & Sciences champion. I would add equestrian champion, but the horses are all plotting against me. I consider my absence from the bardic competition a service to the entire Kingdom, not just the barony.

With all that said, I will happily serve in whatever capacity you desire."

Now we need that bardic hopeful.....?

Baronial Camping for the SCA 50th

After making enquiries among the baronial populace His Excellency and I have decided that interest in camping for the SCA 50 Year Event is not high enough that the Barony warrented a separate camping area at the event.

However there is going to be a Kingdom Campsite that members of the kingdom will be more then welcome at if there are people in the barony that would like to stay on site. If anyone needs information on how to do so you can Register Here, or contact Us for help.

Here are some other links with a good amount of information for the event:

May the odds be ever in your favor!

Another hopeful champion has raised his hand and entered the ring! Please congratulate THL Cynwulf Rendell who has put forth his name to compete for the position of Hael archery champion.

The Scroll (shown below) was created by THL Eleanore Godwin...who I believe also, as the scroll says and Cynwulf remarked..."threatened my personal well being if I did not request permission to compete"...

Good luck Rendell!

Remember its not too late to declare! Her Excellency and I have already received more and will post them shortly.

Ice Dragon Thanks From the Baron and Baroness

Over the years we have attended many Ice Dragons, as simple attendees helping a friend, to volunteering at troll and gold key, then as head of the guard and pursuivant / retainer. So we felt that there was not much the could surprise us about the event. However this year, our first year as Baron and Baroness we were proved wrong!

For the first time instead of looking at the event with eyes focused on the single job before us, not really seeing the rest of went on during the event, we had a chance to see it all and all of the hard work put into it.

It started on Friday when setup for the event began, watching members of the Barony and Society new and old, rushing around the armory offering a helping hand to anyone lugging totes, stringing ropes, and placing tables. No job was too big or too small in these people's eyes. A job that could have taken a day or two was done in hours, everyone leaving the site feeling good about the the next day and the challenges to come.

Saturday we were ready to be busy, our schedule packed with everything we could fit into it. courts, merchants, vigils, salons, pent, visiting everyone working hard in different areas of the site, we did not want to miss anything! As the day progressed we saw so many people having fun enjoying all of the activities the event had to offer and we had chances to share many of those moments with them as we traveled the site.

However the other thing we saw, with eyes trained to see those doing services for our Barony and our Kingdom, were the people working hard so their friends could enjoy the day. The relatively new lady, sitting at troll, counting money, filling out papers and smiling with bright eyes at every person that stood in front of her. The cooks working hard in the basement, hot, tired, but somehow able to offer cookies and cheery hellos as we came to see what wonderful foods they had to offer the populace for the day. MOLs and Marshals on the list fields, forgoing a day of relaxing or fighting so that others could enjoy hitting each other with sticks, or poking a friend with steel. The heralds, guards, retainers running from place to place, sometimes standing for hours at points, Happy to help the assorted royalty and baronage as they went about their duties for the day. Then the gentles that who were already tired and worn out from the long day, helped to disassemble and clean the site once the event was complete.

These were just some of the services we saw during the day, services that showed what makes our Barony and Kingdom so wonderful.

We want to thank you all, everyone that helped to make The Passing of the Ice Dragon the spectacular event that it was. We can never thank all of you enough, but we certainly plan to try!

Champs Selection Update!

After some thought Her Excellency and I have decided to amend our champion selection process as follows:

Attending Baronial Champs is no longer required to declare, compete for, and ultimately win the position as a champion.

Her Excellency and I felt that eliminating people because they cannot attend a single event (often after months of active participation and service) is counter intuitive to the spirit of our selection process. In addition we may decide to hold some of our champion activities (the tie breakers events if you will) at practices to better accommodate scheduling and/or weather.

This means that some of the Champions selections will be announced after Palfreys & Pole Arms (May 27, 2016 - May 29, 2016). The bulk of the Champions (as well as the secondary awards) will be decided and announced at P&P.

We encourage as many people as possible to attend Palfreys & Pole Arms, enjoy the events we hold there, and show their Baronial pride.

If there are any questions please contact us.

We look forward to hearing from our future champions!

Æthelmearc A&S Faire! April 23rd.

Her Excellency and I are big fans of A&S and want to support any event that features the talents of the Kingdom and the Barony. A new event on our radar is the Ã†thelmearc A&S Faire. The event is scheduled for April 23rd 2016 in the Shire of Hartstone. We plan to attend and encourage people to not only join us but consider entering something or sponsor an entrant. Here are some details on the event from the Ministers of Arts and Sciences as well as some important links. We suggest that you direct any questions about the event to either the Autocrat or the Ministers. Contact details are included in the links below.

From: Fridrikr & Orianna, Kingdom Ministers of Arts and Sciences

To the gentlefolk of Æthelmearc, greetings!

On April 23rd, the Kingdom A&S Office, with the great help & generosity of the Shire of Hartstone, will hold the first Æthelmearc Arts & Sciences Faire.

As part of the event, we will be holding an A&S Prize Tourney. As this type of tourney is new to Æthelmearc, we would like to briefly explain how it is designed to work.

First, the name “tourney” is a bit misleading. The tourney is actually an exhibition, open only to gentles who have a Sycamore or no kingdom A&S award. The purpose is to display the talents of these gentles.

Second, there will an evaluation of the displays that are entered. We intend to have teams of 3-4 evaluators, each of which will look at and comment on one or two displays per hour. The evaluations will consist of viewing the exhibit and the documentation provided, then discussing the exhibit with the entrant. If you were at Kingdom A&S Champions last October, then you will be familiar with the process we’ll using.

Third, we are asking companions of the Fleur and the Laurel to do two things: first, to sponsor entrants in the tourney. This means to provide guidance, advice, and moral support to the entrants sponsored, and to provide a small token or present which will be given to an entrant of the Tourney. For every entrant a Fleur or Laurel sponsors, that Fleur or Laurel should also provide a present. Second, we are asking the Fleurs and Laurels to attend the event and act as evaluators. This is anticipated to be an all-day task, or least take as long as there are exhibitions that have not been evaluated. We encourage the evaluators to look at all the exhibitions, even those they are not evaluating. After the tourney has finished, the evaluators will meet to discuss what they saw during the day.

At the end of the day, during court, the presents will be presented to the entrants by the Fleurs and Laurels. We also hope that the sitting Barons & Baronesses and the Royalty who are present will bring tokens to present to their favorite displays of the day.

Further details on the Prize Tourney and other A&S activities during the day will be forthcoming. Thanks for reading this rather long message. We hope that you will be able to attend the A&S Faire!

Investiture...a wonderful look back

Her Excellency and I received many wonderful words and gifts on the day of our Investiture, but just this week one last gift arrived. Before investiture we asked our friend Gerardo Vicelli if he would be kind enough to take photos and video during the event. Not only did he give up his day doing that but he also delivered this gem of a video. I think his work not only captures the event, but really serves as a wonderful glimpse into life in the Hael.

I hope you all enjoy it as much as we did. Vivat Gerardo you are truly a gift.

Competing for a Champion position!

Competing for a Champion position:

Her Excellency and I would like to try something different this year when it comes to selecting our Champions. Normally the outgoing champions run a tournament to determine a single winner. The winner is often (but not always) selected to be the new Champion. This year we want to move away from an “all or nothing tournament” format. Instead Miriel and I will be looking at the perspective new champions in the sense of “the big picture”.  Do they attend practices, meetings, and events, are they improving in their discipline(s) of choice, and are they well rounded members of the SCA?Please note this will only apply to the arts and science, heavy fighting, thrown weapons, fencing, bardic, and archery Champions. The Iron Man, Baronial Key Stone, Queen Anne memorial trophy, most improved fencer, most improved fighter, and chivalry positions are determined without a tournament.

So what is involved?

1) Declare your intent: People interested in competing for a position as one of our new champions must first declare themselves to us. A person can declare at any time up to and including the day of Champs, however waiting too long limits our ability to assess your progress and may impact our final choice. Declaring yourself as a candidate can be as simple as sending us an e-mail or more elaborate. The creativity of your declaration will be taken into consideration! Do not give gifts! This is not about that. We are looking for moving speeches, letters, etc. Please get creative and have fun. We will list the candidates as they declare so people know who is competing.

2) Participate: Once you have declared yourself as a candidate make sure to get out and demonstrate your talents. Her Excellency and I will be watching how people progress as well as consulting people (such as marshals) on their opinions of the candidates. Feel free to post about your experiences on Facebook, blogs, etc. Self-promotion is not a bad thing. Just because your specialty does not have a public practice (such as bardic) please feel free to show off when you can. Shoot a you- tube video and share it, perform casually at events, and so on.

What do we need?

We need eyes and ears! Her Excellency and I attend as much as we can but we can’t be everywhere. We encourage people to speak up about how the candidates are doing. Just like award recommendations we want to hear the opinions of the populace. These future champions represent us all! This can be done privately or publically. However we are not interested in negative public opinions. Please keep it friendly.

What do we need from the out-going Champions?

Normally it is the responsibility of the out-going to champion to run (or help run) the tournament to determine the new champions. We would like this to happen again this year but is not required to have a contest that has a single winner (or a contest at all). We are looking for people to have fun and take one last chance to show their skill (so Her Excellency and I can make our final choices). This does not have to be a contest or even a tournament. For example, if they heavy fighters want to run a day of melee battles that is fine. Fight, have fun, we will be looking. As we get closer Her Excellency and I will reach out to the out-going champions to clarify our wishes and discuss our plans.

So let the games begin!

If there are any questions or concerns please contact us.

Magnus and Miriel.

Baronial Champs...what is it all about?

Baronial Champs & the Seven Pearls!

Baronial Champs is quickly approaching but what does all this champion business really mean? I wrote this article for the Ice Dragon last year and thought it would be good to give it some new life for this year.

The Seven Pearls.

At the heart of Baronial champs is a Kingdom-wide
competition known as the Seven Pearls. The Seven Pearls takes its name from the seven Baronies in the Kingdom (and the pearls that decorate a Baronial coronet).  There is a Seven Pearls competition for each of the following activities: Arts and science, heavy fighting, thrown weapons, fencing, bardic, and archery. Each year every Barony in the Kingdom selects a champion for each category. This is typically done by holding a local Baronial champions tournament. Once selected the new champions travel to the seven pearls tournament to complete for the glory of their Barony and bragging rights for the year. The format of these contests can change from year to year, but for the most part the basic set up remains the same.

When and where are the Seven Pearls tournaments held?

The location of the Seven Pearl tournaments changes from year to year so please stay tuned for updates on times and locations. Before competing locally it is a good idea for people to check if they can travel to the Seven Pearls portion of the contest. This will not exclude them from the competitions but knowing ahead of time will help the Barony plan for a backup. If for some reason the current champion cannot attend the Seven Pearls event the Barony will most likely select a proxy to compete. The current champion does not lose their title if they cannot compete. Members of the Barony not competing are encouraged to show up to the Seven Pearls tournaments and cheer on the competitors.

Can new people compete in Baronial champs and the Seven Pearls?

Absolutely! The only real requirement is that you are a member of the Barony and be authorized (or otherwise cleared) to participate in the tournament of choice. Not only is competing on a local level a great way to get more involved with the Barony it is also a great way to experience the different activities the SCA has to offer. There is nothing wrong with trying your hand at something new. Don’t let being new or inexperienced in an activity dissuade you from entering. Win or lose the Seven Pearls is a wonderful experience. People are also encouraged to complete in multiple local contests but typically a person will only be asked to serve in one capacity as a champion (but one person competing in multiple Seven Pearls tournament has happened!).

Other than the Seven Pearls what are the responsibilities of a champion?

In addition to competing in the Seven Pears tournaments the champions continue to represent the Barony during the year. The champions are often invited to process into court with the Baron and Baroness and stand behind them in court. At the baronial champs the following year the outgoing champion is responsible for running (or helping to run) the tournament that helps determine the next champion. If the current champion is not a qualified Marshal (in the activities that require this) they can work with other local Marshal to run the tournament.  Don’t worry there is plenty of help and guidance available.

So what are these other awards that are handed out at Champs?

In addition to the activities mentioned above the Barony also hands out several other awards at champs. These awards are local to the Barony and not part of the Seven Pearls competition (but certainly no less of an honor).

These include:

Iron Man: Awarded to the person who competes in the most tournaments at Baronial champs.

Baronial Key Stone: A Key Stone is a Kingdom level award for service. The Barony of the Rhydderich Hael was awarded its own Key Stone and each year a new person is selected to be the bearer of the Baronial Key Stone. The bearer of the Baronial Keys stone is given a Key Stone to wear for the year and is welcome to come forward when other members of the Order of the Keystone are called up in Kingdom court.

Queen Anne memorial trophy: This is awarded to people who have overcome great adversity during the year but still embody the spirit of the SCA and the Barony.

Most improved fencer: Awarded to the fencer that the other fencers have deemed most improved over the year. It is not required this go to a new person.

Most improved fighter: Awarded to the heavy fighter that the other fighters have deemed most improved over the year. It is not required this go to a new person.

Chivalry: Awarded to the person who the Barony considers a fine example of honor and Chivalry.

I hope this shed at least a little light on what it means to be a Baronial champion and encourages more people to step up and compete this year. If people have questions or just want to talk about the subject please free to contact us. Shortly we will post information on how we plan to pick our champions for the coming year. It will be a bit different than the past few years and we hope people enjoy it.

Ice Dragon is coming! Help wanted...

With Investiture out of the way it is time to turn our attention to Ice Dragon 2016. This year Ice Dragon is the weekend of April 2nd and while that might seem ages away it will come up on us fast. As most of you can guess (or know first hand) running Ice Dragon is no small task so we need your help! Currently the Autocrat is looking for help in all areas including but not limited to troll, merchant set up, runners, salon setup, general setup, and of course tear down. Its not back breaking work but the more hands we have the easier it is.

No amount of help is too small. If you only have time to move five chairs that is five less chairs we have to worry about at the end of a long day. Can't make the event Saturday? Show up Friday and help. Don't be turned away because you are new or feel you don't have enough experience. Trust us, if you have the time we have a spot! In addition to helping out volunteering is a great way to learn about running events, meet new people, and help your Barony.

Lastly, and perhaps this is the serious bit, never assume that there will always be someone else to do the job. We understand that people want to enjoy the event, but remember that pleasure should extend in some small part to the staff as well. The less people that step up to help the harder the day is for everyone else. I would rather 100 people offer help that is not needed than watch 10 people do the whole job and go home exhausted.

So please as soon as you can contact the Autocrat Lord Wolfgang Starke and offer your help. If you cannot get in touch with Wolfgang contact either Miriel or myself. We will get your information to him.

If you are currently on staff please take a moment to check in with  the Autocrat to see if he needs you to do anything and when the time comes remember to promote the event and your area as much as possible.

Thank you to everyone ahead of time.
