Scroll from the past, finally delivered!

One of the fun jobs of a Baron & Baroness is handing out scrolls and awards. Sometimes these come from our hands, but sometimes the task falls on us to deliver the words of the King and Queen. Not long ago, while attending the College of Three Ravens in Thescorre, a backlog scroll came to us. A Silver Buckle  (youth service award) for a "Robert of the Rhydderich Hael". I decided to take the scroll and search for the owner. Thanks to the power of social media I was able to contact Robert and (if my math is correct) deliver his scroll 14 years after is was awarded. Thanks to everyone who helped in the quest! Robert, enjoy the scroll. Maybe we will see you around again.

Baronial Nominations April 4th 2018 - A word from the Election Steward

On April 4th 2018 the Barony continues the process of electing a new Baron and/or Baroness with the call for nominations and the selection of potential candidates. The nomination process will happen at the April Baronial business meeting under the guidance of the Election committee and in accordance with Baronial policy. Her Excellency and I invite the populace to join us in support of the Barony and encourage people new and old to participate in the process. A link to the Baronial policies is provided below and explains the election policy, the nomination process, and the requirements to serve as Baron and/or Baroness. If you have any questions about serving as Baron and Baroness, please ask. We are always willing to discuss the job. Serving as the Baron and Baroness has been a great honor and we look forward to watching the selection of our Heirs. Please join us!

Several people have asked question about the election and the election process that are not covered in the Baronial policy. Her Excellency Baroness Elisabeth Johanna von Flossenburg was nice enough to answer several of these questions. If you have other questions please direct them to Her Excellency Elisabeth by e-mail at: (bostonhahn at aol dot com)

Can people accept the nomination immediately or are they required to wait 48 hours?

They can accept verbally immediately if they meet all the requirements outlined in the policy. They must furnish a copy of valid ID and a valid SCA membership card. They can also write an acceptance letter in advance and turn it in at the time they accept the nomination. They can also wait until the last minute.

Policy says people must accept nominations in writing. Can that be an e-mail, Facebook, etc? Or does it have to be pen and paper?

I personally do not care, but we do need a file copy of the acceptance if asked by the Kingdom Seneschal or the Crown, so I feel it is best to write an acceptance letter in paper and pen/pencil. Again, this can be done in advance if they so choose.

Who do they send this acceptance letter to? The policy does not specify.

The acceptance letter should be given to the Seneschal or to any member of the election committee. However, in the end they should be kept by the Seneschal with any other election materials in case they have to be produced if any questions about the election should arise.

Can people who accept the nomination make it public right away, or should they wait the 48 hours until all the nominees have responded?

The acceptance can be made public immediately.

Can people campaign after accepting the nomination?

I see no reason against campaigning if someone so chooses. There are no restrictions.

There is a tradition of asking the nominees a series of questions. These questions are then post in the newsletter along with photos. This is not in policy. Do you plan to do this?

The introduction of the candidates will be left to the Chronicler. This will include a series of set questions given to the candidates to answer. These answers will be published in the newsletter prior to the election. The nature of the questions will be determined by the populace. Prior to the nomination meeting the Chronicler will ask the populace (via Facebook and Yahoo) what questions they would like to ask the Candidates. A selection of these question will be drawn from the populace responses and sent to the candidates to answer. Please watch for more information on this.

Any additional thoughts?

I would like very much to add a reminder for everyone to check their membership expiration and to renew if there may be a chance that it will expire or already is expired. Each person must be an active member in order to vote.  This means that they must have an active membership at the time the mailing labels are created or they cannot vote.  I remember that the first time there were elections in the Barony I had just renewed my membership but for some reason my mailing label was not included.  Sir Calidus called Milpitas and checked, I produced my receipt and was able to get it rectified.  But there is never a guarantee that this can be done.  So let's try to avoid this kind of situation!

Thanks to all the Blog Contributors!

Hey Blog team! Last weekend at the College of Three Ravens the M&M blog was unexpectedly honored with a nomination for "Best Blog" in the 2018 William Blackfox Web Awards. While the certificate does mention Miriel and Myself, more importantly it mentions the Barony. Honestly this Blog would not happen if not for the many contributions from all of you. We share this with all of you and hope you are as proud as we are!

Wolfgang’s Crusader Ale, and other anachronistic brews - Remembering a friend

In memory of THL Wolfgang Starcke - a brewer, a teacher, a barkeep - the Æthelmearc Guild of Brewers, Vintners, and Meadhers is hoping to assemble a SCAdian brewing book. Of you we ask to please share with us your recipes – help us remember Wolfgang as we hope he would appreciate.

The general idea is to collect recipes and anecdotes (preferably anecdotes to go with the recipes) from all the brewers and others that Wolfgang and his brews have influenced over the years. We're hoping for a mix from the lowliest Pennsic utility brew to the loftiest of documented Ice Dragon entries.

Show us your recipes, show us your memories, show us your photos, sketches and illustrations. Share what you know he liked, or not, or what you think he might appreciate. Help make Wolfgang an even more lasting presence in our community, and an inspiration for those who come after – now, as well as in life.

The Kingdom of Æthelmearc Brewers Guild has dedicated a page (also found via the Events & Activities tab) to this endeavor at:

http://brewers.aethelmearc.org/cookbook.html

You can use the link at the bottom of the page to enter your submission, including contact information, your story or anecdote, historical inspiration, if applicable, and modern recipe. For your inspiration, and to take a sneak peek at previous submissions, we chose to offer you the option of viewing previous submissions. How the final Brew book will look like depends on the type and volume of submissions: so let's all pull together and aim for something BIG!

Yours in Service,

Elska, Maggie Rue and Madoc Arundel.

Announcing the Golden Bee Herald!

Please accept our apology for taking so long to announce this. Just before Summers End 2017 Master Dagonell Collingwood approached Her Excellency and I with the idea of recognizing one of our populace, THL Eleanore Godwin, for her hard work as a submission Herald. The submission herald is responsible for managing the submission process for names and armory (devices). Her Excellency and I, having worked with Eleanore locally, agreed completely. In our opinion, the names and devices people choose is an important part of a person’s sense of belonging to our Society. Often it is one of the first things a person participates in when they join the society, and the Heralds that assist with this are on the forefront of the participation. They are as much a part of making new members feel welcome as a Chatelaine or demo coordinator. Eleanore is a perfect example of this and she is often assisting people not only behind the scenes but at practices an events.

Instead of one of the many Baronial or Kingdom awards (of which she has many) Dagonell suggested we name her Baronial deputy position as “Golden Bee” Herald in her honor. While the title holds no precedence, and will move from Eleanore to the next deputy, we felt it was a fitting way to recognize her hard work and dedication. This was announced in court at Summers End and she was presented with a heraldic tabard as a symbol of her office. Please take a chance to congratulate her and thank her for her work when you next see her.

Hard to believe that time has come already. What a ride it has been!

This fall Her Excellency and I are required to decide if we will ask for the one year extension to our three year reign. Policy indicates this choice be made no later than November of this year, however after a lengthy discussion we have decided to announce our decision early. After talking about it at length, Her Excellency and I have decided to end our reign at three years and not ask for the extension. This was not an easy choice for either of us. The past two years have been a wonderful experience for both of us. We thought back to our first event, the Investiture of Carolus and Isolda, when Miriel and I had barely cut our teeth in the SCA, to our years of service as retainer, guard, and herald. As new members of the Barony we helped craft the very thrones in which we would later sit. It is something we will remember for the rest of our time in the SCA and our lives. Very shortly the process will begin to find our Heirs, and Her Excellency look forward to seeing who that will be and watching them make their own mark on the Barony. Her Excellency and I are available to talk to interested people and answer questions as we are able. We encourage everyone with an interest to think about running. It is a wonderful job, yes there are some hard days, but it is worth every minute. We will save further thanks for later because we are not done yet and we have no intention of slowing down! This choice was not made due to a lack of energy, interest, or pride in the Barony. We have a year to go and we are already making plans for next year.

Announcement - New Baronial Siege Captain appointed

Lord Chebe
Over the summer myself, Lord Chebe, and Lady Thalia Papillon had the pleasure of attending a siege muster in the Barony of St. Swithin's Bog. The three of us came away from the event with our authorizations in siege and a new interest in developing siege in the Barony. Lord Chebe quickly took the lead, and soon after, the Hael had its first working siege engine. Lord Chebe continued to build interest by demoing the machine at local events, educating people on siege, and encouraging people to give it a try. At Pennsic Chebe and Thalia fought in their first battles as siege engineers. Her Excellency and I spoke with the current Captain of Siege, Master Filipo de Sancto Martino, on his feelings and interest in holding the position. Master Filipo expressed an interest in participating in siege but agreed that appointing a new Captain would help to foster the local siege program. At Pennsic on the night of the Baronial Pot luck Her Excellency and I offered the position of Siege Captain to Lord Chebe, and he happily accepted. Lord Chebe is currently working on forming an official Hael siege unit as well as a local muster. Look for more information on this shortly. Her Excellency and I are confident the future of siege in the Barony is in good hands.

The eve of Pennsic is upon us!

The eve of Pennsic is upon us! Some have already departed (or are about to), while others still have days to wait. In either case Her Excellency and I wish you all a wonderful and exciting Pennsic. Try to avoid packing panic (trust us it will all fit in the car) and when you hit the road may you have safe travels. While braving the hot days and long hours please look out for each other and stay safe. If you need anything while you are there please come and see us. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, guidance, or assistance. If there is something you would like Her Excellency or I to support or witness please let us know. We will do our best to accommodate as much as possible. If you are new to Pennsic or the Barony know you are always welcome to come and join us and feel part of the family. Sadly we understand many of you that cannot join us this year. You are not forgotten. We will miss you and look forward to seeing you when we return. Keep the Barony safe why we are away at War!

Oh and as always….Hael Yeah!

New Baronial Officer ?

Several Baronial meetings ago it was decided the Barony needed a sign or other attention grabber to put next to our fighter practice costs donation bucket. A certain something that caught the eye and directed people where to put their donations. A while passed and like with many good ideas nothing had come to fruition...then suddenly Leily Ashe came forward with a new member of the Barony. A good will ambassador to guide the populace to the donation bucket. We would like to to introduce the "Bucket Troll"! This little guy even comes with his own Baronial tunic and handcrafted chain armor. Thanks Leily for the creativity and hard work!  Look for Bucket troll and a Baronial fighter practice near you...and bring your coin...he is watching...

Sound the Horn!!! Champs approaches...

Calling all Champions! Time is quickly approaching when Her Excellency and I must select new champions. We are sounding the call to the lands seeking new blood to step up and serve the Barony! It is our goal to keep things interesting, so this year instead of a dedicated Baronial Champs event we are holding our champion tournaments at our local practices. The purpose for this is two fold. First we hope to relieve everyone's already busy event schedule, but more importantly we want to draw attention to our local practices and the hard work that goes into them.

What does it take to be a Baronial champ? Glad you asked! The only requirements include: You must be a resident of the Barony or the Canton, you must have the required authorizations for the activity you wish to participate in (such as a heavy authorization), and you must be able to attend the Seven Pearls event in September (located in Endless Hills). Other than that it is open to all.

Don't shy away from competing because you are new, or you don't feel you have enough experience. The honor of being a champ is about representing the Barony not about bringing home the win. This is a great chance to experience a new side of SCA life and Her Excellency and I will be equally proud of anyone who steps up.

More details will follow on when the tournaments will be, the format for each, and who is running them. Over the next month or so we will reach out to our current champions to discuss the details. Her Excellency and I will also decided on when we will hold the tournaments for the "non-practice" activities as well as when we will hand out awards such as Chivalry champ.

Please stay tuned for more information.

New Staff member and many thanks!

My apologies for the delay posting this information. On each anniversary of our investiture Her Excellency and I privately contact each member of our staff and give them the option to stay another year or move on. We decided to do this because four years is a long time (that being the potential length of our reign) and it was important to us that our staff had the freedom to enjoy the SCA in their own way.

This year our Head of Retainers, Mistress Geirný Thorgrímsdóttir, has made the choice to move on. Her Excellency and I would like to offer our thanks and love to Mistress Geirný for her hard work, advice, and guidance during our first year as Baron and Baroness. It was  a comfort knowing we had the council of a former Baroness of the Hael as well as such a good friend at our side as we started our journey. I am not sure my words alone can describe the level of dedication and service Mistress Geirný brings to Our Barony and to the Kingdom. She is certainly a credit to both. For me it is people like Mistress Geirný that make the SCA such a special place. When you see her, please take time to thank her for all that she does. Mistress Geirný offered the following lovely words.

"My year (and a bit) as Head Retainer has come to an end. It has been an honor and a pleasure to work with Their Excellencies and I could not be happier with them and for them. And with all of my staff who have helped to look after them, and helped them to create the atmosphere the Society strives to foster. You folks are the best! Thank you, Your Excellencies, and everyone who has been a retainer and or guard. Please welcome and thank Lady Genevieve O'Connor to the role. I ask all staff to please do what you can to assist her in assuming charge of and maintaining the Baronial Entourage. She is a kind and lovely gentlewoman, who I have no doubt will do a fantastic job! Lastly, I'd like to thank my comrade, Saku, Captain of the Guard, who is the backbone of the retinue. Without you, I'd probably have made a muck of things. YIS, Geirny"

Thankfully another good friend, recently returned to the Barony, and has agreed to take on the roll of our Head of Retainers. We are proud to welcome Lady Genevieve O'Connor to the staff. Her Excellency and I thank her ahead of time for taking on such a busy and often demanding task.

If you are interested in joining our team of guards and retainers please contact us. We welcome both new and experience people and there is no minimum time requirement. Volunteer once or many times. You can find the contact information for our staff here:

We also have a Facebook page for the guards and retainers (we have to add you before you can see it, so please contact us).

For most of the events we are looking for guard and retainers (this is noted in the listing). If you are willing to volunteer for a few shift let us or our staff know. Ice Dragon will be a big one and our need for guards and retainers will be great (even more so for court). The more hands we have the easier the workload. Thanks ahead of time. Happy one year anniversary Haelies!

Happy one year anniversary Haelies!

From Magnus: A year ago this month Miriel and I stepped up as Baron and Baroness of the Rhydderich Hael. While we have failed to produce the same fine weather as our investiture day, our first year has been very smooth (and in my opinion) successful. None of that success would have been possible without the help of our brave staff. Thank you to our Cofferer of the Wardrobe, Mistress Ysabeau Tiercelin, the Head of Retainers, Mistress Geirný Thorgrímsdóttir, Captain of the Guard, Minamoto Roku-i Sakurako (aka Saku), and our Court Herald, Baroness Ekaterina Volkova. In addition to the staff many thanks to the guards and retainers who helped us all year long. Having served as a Baronial guard myself I can say it is no easy task (likewise for retainers). With equal gratitude we recognize the officers, marshals, and other Baronial support folks who make the Barony run like a well-oiled machine. Without a strong Barony our rank as Baron and Baroness means nothing and your hard work and dedication continues to make the Barony strong! Lastly my personal thanks to my Baronial counterpart, Her Excellency, Miriel du Lac. I could not ask for a better partner in crime and I look forward to many more years of Baronial tom-foolery! It has been a pleasure to watch her grow into the role of Baroness as well as her continued dedication and success in the fencing lists. As many have often said “you cannot lead from the rear” and Miriel has certainly proven herself on the front line.

From Miriel: Well a year has gone by since I knelt beside His Excellency and we took our oath to become Baron and Baroness of the Rhydderich Hael. I couldn’t have imagined then how much I would learn about the people of the Hael and the barony itself in the coming year. Going to our Barony’s events and watching the busy beehive that is the autocrat and their team all working together to make the event come out great through highs and lows, always with pride and hard work. Staying with the Barony for Pennsic, the friendship and care people had for each other over those two HOT weeks. The beautiful quiet moments where food was enjoyed and music was played and we were together as a group, with friends from other lands to share it. Our Baronial Champions showing their perseverance, pride, and skills at the first Seven Pearl Championship. How they drove themselves to prove how outstanding they already were to the kingdom and other baronies. I was honored as their Baroness being able to stand with them, to show my support and pure joy in their deeds. Of course the quiet things we forget to mention sometimes, the meetings, the practices, and the get togethers, where we as a people grew and advanced with each other. Dance, Archery, A&S, Heavy, Fencing, Thrown, Food, and many more!! As I said in closing in the lovely video of Magnus and I’s Investiture last year, I still “Can’t Wait” to see what the future will hold for the Barony and me as its Baroness in the next coming years. Bring it on Rhydderich Hael, I’m ready!!

So what is next? The next Baronial event is Baronial 12th night, followed by Ice Dragon (and our return to the Erie County Fair Ground) in April 2017. Need more events? Winter is studded with tons of good out of Barony events. Please take a look at our Baronial schedule for the events we plan to attend…Kingdom 12th night, Adult swim, Three Ravens, and Feast of the Seven Deadly sins.

So in parting, may the snows replenish our lands and then quickly depart opening the passes with the warmth of spring once again heralding the arrival of the arrival of the great host of the Rhydderich Hael..oh and as always...Hael Yeah!

Companions of the Golden Scale

Her Excellency and I are honored with the privilege of creating new awards for the Barony. It is a chance to put our mark on the legacy of the Baronial court and we are excited to do so. After some discussion we decided that the award the Barony was lacking was something that recognized people from outside our borders. People who are not only dedicated to the SCA but also regularly support the Barony even though they call other lands home. The name of this new award will be “Companion of the Golden Scale”. We would like to share the creation of this new award with our Populace by sponsoring a two part contest. The first part of the contest is Bardic/A&S. We are looking for poems, songs, or written work that brings to life the “fictional” story behind the award (more on that below). The second part is the creation of a “token” that we will hand out to the recipients of this award. The deadline for this contest is August 20th. People may enter one or both contests. We will display everything submitted, but we will choose only one (one story and one token) as the final winners. Each winner’s work will become part of the history of the Barony.

The story part of the contest: We are looking for poems, songs, or written work that brings to life the “fictional” story behind the award. Other forms of creative work are acceptable, but primarily we are looking for a story we can read/sing/recite. We don’t want to restrict this too much, but keeping the time required to read/perform the story to under five minutes or so would be good. The basic inspiration in our mind is as follows. Please use it as a starting point for your work:

“At some time in the past a traveler not of our lands wandered into the Barony. This person wandered into the lair of the Ice Dragon and faced certain death. However this person did something that so inspired the Ice Dragon that the Dragon plucked a scale from his own body and gifted it to the traveler. This token was a sign that the person was allowed safe travel in the land”.

The token part of the contest: This award will not include a scroll when it is handed out. The recipient is given a token to display. We are looking for people to design and create the token we will hand out. The token should be something people can wear (medallion is best) and something that can be recreated by people other than the designer for later awards. We ask that the person creates at least one of their tokens to enter into the contest. The winning token will be the first one we hand out.

We look forward to seeing your work. If there are any questions please ask us.

Magnus & Miriel

Baronial Camping for the SCA 50th

After making enquiries among the baronial populace His Excellency and I have decided that interest in camping for the SCA 50 Year Event is not high enough that the Barony warrented a separate camping area at the event.

However there is going to be a Kingdom Campsite that members of the kingdom will be more then welcome at if there are people in the barony that would like to stay on site. If anyone needs information on how to do so you can Register Here, or contact Us for help.

Here are some other links with a good amount of information for the event:
