Populace in Focus! - THL Maeve Ni Siurtain

Real Name: Michele Nufer

SCA Name and Title: THL Maeve Ni Siurtain

Years in the SCA: On and off, 30+

Persona: Celtic, 10th-13th century Celtic Chieftain’s daughter. Never really came up with a detailed persona story

Group or Household affiliations if any: Ravenstar Lance, inactive with Tuatha Fieren

Tell us a bit about your life outside the SCA.

Currently I am a stay at home mom of 2 children. Erin, who just turned 21, and Ian, who is 12.  I am a former Special Education Teacher, teacher assistant (I semi-retired from the education field in 2007. I help out at the barn where my horse, Guinness is boarded in Orchard Park and work per diem for Carnaby Estate sales with Tiercelin. I have a small menagerie, 11 Koi, 2 guinea pigs (Bandit and Shadow) and one neurotic dog (Winston) My husband does not participate in the SCA.

What SCA activities do you participate in?

In my early days in the society, I did a little of everything, heavy (spear) fencing(had authorization in 4 weapon forms) archery (never was very good),scouting at Pennsic, scribal (calligraphy and illumination, which I can’t do anymore) and dance. Nowadays, I participate in equestrian mostly, embroidery and teach a few classes now and then as well as help wherever needed or wanted.

Tell us a little bit about your SCA experience.

I have been Baronial Dance Mistress and MOL and more recently Baronial Chatelaine and now Region 4 Chatelaine. My experience with the SCA started way back in 1985 at Buffalo State College at the Milton festival that they were participating in. I used to travel, and made many friends in many groups when I would stay with them and also when people came up here and crashed at my home. I have been in 2 kingdoms and one principality without even moving! (East and Aethelmearc).

What are your goals in the SCA?

Goals? Maybe to be King’s Equestrian champion at least once... To find a way to participate more without undue stress at home. To finally make some court garb… And one way out goal/ wish, to be fought for in a crown tourney.

If you could accomplish only one thing in the SCA in the year 2018 what would it be?

To ride in as many equestrian events as I can.

What advice would you give to a new person in the SCA, or if new yourself what question would you ask and who would you ask it of?

Try everything, go to meetings/practices, be curious (it’s ok to ask questions/give compliments (ooh, I really like your____...) It’s so much easier to get information these days as opposed to when I joined (had to go to libraries!). As to who to ask, Anyone! The groups are pretty friendly and happy to talk about anything! When I was new, I would wander around and if I saw something that interested me, I would ask the nearest person, or the one doing it about it

If you magically woke up with an SCA talent you do not already have what would it be?

Maybe to be excellent at one of the things I’ve tried??

Additional comments as you see fit.

Being around as long as I have, I have seen changes in group dynamics and styles. Believe it or not, there are fashion trends!  Sideless surcoats, Tudor, Italian Ren, and quite a bit of Viking! The quality/ authenticity of garb has increased immensely over the decades. I consider myself as a “jack of many trades”, so, I know some about a lot of things!  If you see me at an event or practice, feel free to come and chat, I love meeting and talking to people (guess that’s why I like being a chatelaine<LOL)

Populace in focus - Lord Fearghus mac Eoin

Real Name:

Nathan Littlejohn

SCA Name and Title:

Lord Fearghus mac Eoin

Years in the SCA?

Just south of 20

Persona:

14th century Scottish wandering crusader type.

Group or Household affiliations if any:

House Gladique Scoparum

Tell us a bit about your life outside the SCA:

I work in the construction, primarily large industrial projects. I spend a fair amount of time tending my garden and working in my wood shop. I currently reside with my lovely lady, a Skye terrier whose name is Oscar, two geckos, and a rather grumpy bearded dragon. I also bonfires and beer.

What SCA activities do you participate in:

Primarily heavy fighting, but also woodworking, calligraphy & illumination, and armoring. Also period cooking and food preservation. Someday I may dabble more in brewing but there’s only so many hours in the day.

Tell us a little bit about your SCA experience (offices, etc):

My semi nomadic lifestyle has led me across three kingdoms (the East, Aethelmearc, and Atlantia) so the only office I’ve held was Knight Marshal of Thescorre. I have autocratted, run more demos than I can count, helped in the kitchen, and generally try to make myself useful or at least amusing.

What are your goals in the SCA?

Besides making prettier garb and armor, my main goal has always been to have fun and encouraging others to do the same.

If you could accomplish only one thing in the SCA in the year 2018 what would it be?

Besides attending more events, make more scrolls.

What advice would you give to a new person in the SCA, or if new yourself what question would you ask and who would you ask it of?
Don’t worry about rank, joining households, awards, or any of that, just go to events and have fun.

If you magically woke up with an SCA talent you do not already have what would it be?

Probably embroidery, I like making pretty things.

Meet the Officers: Minister of Arts and Sciences

Now it's time to meet the next officer of the Hael, if you do A&S in our barony this officers wants to help you and guide those who are interested to the art they love. Time to learn about it from THL Eleanore Godwin our Minister of Arts and Sciences

What does the Minister of Arts and Sciences do?

The Minister of Arts and Sciences is a facilitator of education. The officer does a few things that are connected to learning. MoAS's make sure people wanting to learn about a subject are connected to a teacher or place they can have access to the subject they are interested in. The minister also finds students for someone wanting to teach, or opportunities for teachers to teach others.

The MoAS also helps artisans find opportunities to display their work. The MoAS is responsible for arranging classes for their group in subjects that are wanted or helpful to newcomers. Another responsibility is to maintain records of demos, activities participated in by members, who has taught, who took classes, and who made something.
The final responsibility is filing quarterly reports of all these activities. The reports are easily written with the on-line report form provided by the Kingdom Minister of Arts and Sciences Office.

Meet the Officers: Pursuivant

The next installment of our Baronial Officer Blog posts, this one written by our spectacular Pursuivant Mistress Ekaterina Volkova, please enjoy learning about what our Pursuivant does!

Pursuivant
A Great Barony is run with precision
A Baronial Court requires nothing less!
Tradition, discipline, and rules must be the tools
Without them - Disorder! Chaos! Anarchy!
In short, we have a ghastly mess!

What is the Pursuivant?
The Pursuivant is the Baronial Herald. This is a required posting as laid down by the Laws and Policies of the Kingdom of Æthelmearc in Article Vl, Section VI-200. In the Rhydderich Hael, this position has the title of Ice Dragon Pursuivant. The Pursuivant has a drop-dead deputy, in the Hael they are the Haelstone Pusuivant.

What does the Pursuivant do?
  1. The majority of the time, the Pursuivant runs Baronial Courts. This means:
    1. keeping track of the docket,
    2. coordinating with the Scribal Guild to make sure scrolls will be coming in and from whom,
    3. running Baronial court,
    4. and filling out court reports for the Silver Buccle Herald.
  2. If they are available, the Pursuivant also heralds in Their Excellencies in processions at such events as the Seven Pearls Tournament, Pennsic, War Practice and Coronations (depending on the wishes of Their Majesties).
  3. Sometimes folks will come to the Pursuivant for help in designing and submitting SCA names and devices. I personally have a deputy that handles this aspect of the job.
  4. Quarterly, it is the responsibility of the Pursuivant to submit a report to Kingdom. This is done via an online form found on the Kingdom Herald’s website.
What is required to be Ice Dragon Pusuivant?
  1. You must be a member in good standing in the Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc.
  2. You must submit your resume to the Seneschal of the Barony with a copy to the current Pursuivant
  3. You must be voted into the office at the voting Barony meeting.
  4. Other things that are a bonus:
  1. Getting along with the current and potential future Baron/Baroness of the Barony,
  2. the ability to keep confidences as you will know award information sometimes months ahead of time,
  3. a loud and carrying voice,
  4. little to no stage fright,
  5. organizational skills (preferably spreadsheet and google docs abilities),
  6. a comfortable pair of shoes (Ice Dragon court is LONG),
  7. a sense of humor is a big bonus too.
What are the perks of being Pursuivant?
  1. You get a front row seat to see people’s faces as they receive awards,
  2. you get to see up close all the pretty scrolls the scribes of the Barony make,
  3. you’re not straining to hear what they are saying in court

Meet the Officers: Knight Marshal

His Excellency and I are doing a series of blog posts written by the Barony's Baronial Officers. We asked the officers to write about what they do as a Officer, what you need to know if you want to ever do the job yourself, and just some fun info as well. Enjoy and we hope you learn something too.

Here is the first by our awesome Knight Marshal Lord Horatius Cincinnatus.

Knight Marshal

Job Duties

Keep everyone safe and encourage more people to fight and become a Marshal. During practices make sure the fighters are having a great time and following all the rules. Help out with new fighters and point them in the right direction. A side note you may be asked to help during Baronial events and rules clarification when needed.

Tech stuff and Expectations

Be a Marshal, run for position, get voted into position and have fun in position. Know the rules of the list found in the Marshals Handbook. Have back up waviors ready and authorization paperwork.

Show up to as many practices as you can. This means showing up even when nobody is there to fight.

Show up to Baronial meetings and help "Count" votes...

Do paperwork as required, yearly and quarterly and if you run fighting at an event.

Help keep good relations with the practice site. Make sure the doors open on time and a keyholder is on site.

Keeping the loaner armour up to date and in working or working*ish* order. Tape and padding fixes most things. Make sure you return armour to him after it is loaned out.

When random people return or make armour donations get them back to the loaner bin. With this said... not all donation meet safety standards we do appreciate all offers but as cool as they are Freon Helms are best used on display.

Consult with the secret order of practice cancellation, that's a trade secret...

Remember at all times you are responsible for keeping people safe and making sure they have a good time. Make sure you pick a good deputy. You never know when you might have to have back up

Hael Groups in Focus - The Woodland Watch

A while ago Maynard von dem Stein was nice enough complete a group interview for the Woodland Watch. The Watch is one of the larger groups represented in the Hael but has an impact far beyond our borders. My apologies for taking such a long time to actually publish this interview.

Who is the head/leader of your group?

Woodland Watch does not have a leader. All peers in the group take a leadership role and help organize, coordinate and provide for the members

When was the group started?

The Watch was started in 2010.

Is the group still active?

The group is still active.

Approximately how many members are in your group?

We will have 45 members as of April 2017 most of which live in AEthelmearc.

Does the group have a device or heraldry?

Our device and name were designed by Duchess Liadain.

What type of group is it (fighting household, A&S, mixed)?

The Watch was started as a fighting company to fight and train together and to defend AEthelmearc in times of war and to support its people in times of peace. It is a group of like minded people that enjoy each other’s company. We fight, train, eat, camp, and help each other in and out of the society. The group has grown into more than a fighting company; we have many pelicans and laurels. We even have a great group of rapier fighters and a Master of Defense.

Is the group primarily in the Rhydderich Hael?

About half of the groups members  live in the Barony of the Rhydderich Hael. Almost all live in the Kingdom of AEthelmearc.

Please provide a brief history of your group.

The Watch was started by Maynard von dem Stein and Liadain ni Dheirdre Chaomhanaigh and a group of their friends including Anna Blackleaf, Otto of Westphalia, Eirikr inn Havi and others that camped and participated together at events and wanted to form a fighting unit on the field.  The group has grown over the years to include rapier fighters, artists, archers etc. and spans to nearly every corner of the Kingdom.

Woodland Watch Device,
designed by Duchess Liadain
Is your group accepting new members?

The Watch does accept new members. We never actively recruit members. For the most part, new member become friends first. They ask about the group and have an interest in joining. We have a period where the person gets to know other members of the group and all members vote to decide if the new person is a good fit.

Who should interested people contact?

The best people to contact are Duke Maynard von dem Stein and Duchess Liadain ni Dheirdre Chaomhanaigh. They are founding members and help coordinate and organize the group. But, you can go to any member of the Watch and ask about the group.

Populace in Focus - Baroness Rosemund von Glinde

Real Name:

Wendy Hart

SCA Name and Title:

Baroness Rosemund von Glinde

Years in the SCA:

I joined back in 1991 or so, took a break for a while, so I’m not sure how you count the years…

Persona:

13th Century German

Group or Household affiliations if any:

Tribe of Tuatha Fieren

Tell us a bit about your life outside the SCA.

I’m an underwriting assistant for an insurance wholesaler, and I do inspections.  It’s SO much fun!  A lot of solving mysteries. I grew up in Western New York, and outside of a few month of living in Australia, I’ve always been here.

What SCA activities do you participate in?

Scribal, siege weapons, cooking, thrown weapons.

Tell us a little bit about your SCA experience (offices, etc):

I was the exchequer  for  the Hael, a VERY long time ago, oh, and I was the 5th Baroness of the Hael…and I LOVED it!

What are your goals in the SCA?

No stress, have fun, learn new things that grab my attention, as they come along, help new people as much as I can.

If you could accomplish only one thing in the SCA in the year 2018 what would it be?

It’s GOING to happen!  I’m going to put on armor and fight in battles at Pennsic, doing siege weapons! I NEVER thought I’d say THAT sentence, EVER….LOL!

What advice would you give to a new person in the SCA, or if new yourself what question would you ask and who would you ask it of?

There are NO expectations here. The only expectations are the ones you impose upon yourself.  If you want to become a peer, go for it!  If you find the prospect of being an “authority” in anything intimidating, then no worries.  Do what makes you happy, and the rest will fall into place.  There is a niche for anyone and everyone in the SCA.

If you magically woke up with an SCA talent you do not already have what would it be?

Metalworking.  I would love to be able to take a piece of stainless steel, and form it into a beautiful coronet or crown.

Additional comments?

I’m always available for anyone to come and ask questions-if you see me at an event, by all means, don’t be afraid to come up and say hello, and ask me how something is done.  If I don’t have the answer, I’ll certainly point you in the direction of another gentle who does.

Populace in Focus - Lady Artemisia da Manarola

Real Name: Autumn Diana Standingwolf

SCA Name and Title: Lady Artemisia da Manarola

Years in the SCA: Nearly 5 years

Persona: Cortigiana Onesta – Italian Renaissance

Group or Household affiliations if any: None

Tell us a bit about your life outside the SCA:

I’m as diverse a person as my AncestryDNA profile suggests. I speak French poorly but enjoy my immersion visits to Montreal immensely. A love of Early Music and Renaissance Faires led to an obsession with all things Irish (Great Big Sea!). While I’m as comfortable on stage belly dancing as I am on the back of a dog sled (actually canine bike-jor), I’m often hidden behind the scenes running things but you're most likely to find me in line for a large double-double.

What SCA activities do you participate in?

Dance, Fiber Arts (on my own), Making Largess, Service.

Tell us a little bit about your SCA experience (offices, etc):
I’m the Dance Mistress, Web Minister, and I’ve run a demo. I’ve participated in several demos outside of the Hael, and one demo outside of Aethelmearc.

What are your goals in the SCA?

I’d like to show people the Arts (& Sciences) in action. I’d love for people to see things being made. I have plans to host Courtesan Style Salons in which the arts are very prevalent. I’d love to perform music for the Hael’s events (when I’m skilled enough). I’d like to provide all manner of entertainment. I also want to advocate for those who feel uncomfortable or lost.

If you could accomplish only one thing in the SCA in the year 2018 what would it be?

Get the combined Hael-Thescorre dance practice up and running with lots and lots of people.

What advice would you give to a new person in the SCA, or if new yourself what question would you ask and who would you ask it of?

Take your time and explore everything that interests you. Also, learn how to behave in Court. Make sure someone tells you how to address people and when to bow and kneel. If you know all of that it will make things so much easier!

If you magically woke up with an SCA talent you do not already have what would it be?

While I really wish I could understand the secret language of the Heralds, if I had to choose one thing, it would be to be able to illuminate things. I can barely draw stick figures.

Groups in Focus - Hael Cats!

Today's Group in Focus is the barony's new rapier unit known as the "Hael Cats". His Excellency and I have enjoyed fighting as a part of the group for the last two Pennsic's and we are really happy for people to get a chance to learn more about the unit and how it is growing!

Does the group have a device or heraldry?

Not yet, hoping too soon!

Who is the head/leader of your group?

No one officially. I (Miriel du Lac) have been guiding the Main base of the fighting unit for the last 2 years, while Wolfgang Starke had been leading the Cats harrier group.

When was the group started?

About two years ago.

Is the group still active?

Oh yeah and we are hoping to grow even more.

Approximately how many members are in your group?

We have about six primary members and a group of floating fighters from the barony and other areas who join us on the field at times.

What type of group is it (fighting household, A&S, mixed)?

Baronial Rapier Unit

Is the group primarily in the Rhydderich Hael?

Yes. Who do have some fighters from other areas who like to line up with us when they can though.

Please provide a brief history of your group.

The Rapier Warlord for Æthelmearc was asking fencing groups to sound off so they could have a count for Pennsic. After discussing it with the Hael fencers we decided that we wanted to make an actual unit and name for the Rhydderich Hael Rapier fighters on the field. And the Hael Cats were born.

Is your group accepting new members?

Yes! We hope to grow even larger and already have more fighters this year!

Who should interested people contact?

Baroness Miriel du Lac: Sara Joy Herringshaw on Facebook or lertia@yahoo.com

Groups in Focus - Hael Hounds!

In addition to interviewing people in the Hael, Her Excellency and I wanted to interview groups, units, and households that dwell in or play with the Hael. Some of these groups are directly attached to the Barony and others just have members that live in the Hael. This time around we are taking a look at the Baronial archery unit the "Hael Hounds".

Does the group have a device or heraldry?

We have an unofficial badge that we use:

Who is the head/leader of your group?

Yes, Cynwulf Rendell is the leader and Eleanore Godwin is the “Den Mother” of the Hounds

When was the group started?

The modern incarnation of the group started when Cynwulf Rendell took over as Captain of the Archers of the Hael in 2014.

Is the group still active?

Hael Yes!  And damn proud of it!

Approximately how many members are in your group?

Twenty four members and growing!

What type of group is it (fighting household, A&S, mixed)?

Archery/Service

Is the group primarily in the Rhydderich Hael?

Yes; the modern incarnation requires members to reside in the Hael.

Please provide a brief history of your group.

It was actually formed by THL Thomas of the Bearwoods and THL Belgrande the Bladegatherer  decades ago.  My understanding is the earlier incarnation was a humorous, loose-knit group of archers. Now, we take being a “Hael Hound” seriously. We serve the Barony proudly, and honorably on the archery field, and our Kingdom when called. You ask what a “Hael Hound” is. A “Hael Hound” is part Dog of War; part Sea Dog of the Barbary Coast, part Cerebus, the three headed Dog of Hell, and part King Charles Spaniel with gentleness and loyalty. That is what it is to be a “Hael Hound'!

Is your group accepting new members?

Yes! The more the merrier!  It's not too hard to become a “Hael Hound”. Be a member of the Barony, attend practice regularly to sharpen your skills, and shoot for the Barony in a tournament or two.

Who should interested people contact?

Cynwulf Rendell/Ralph Spencer, Captain of Archers: archerymarshall@wnysca.org or Eleanore Godwin/Wanda Spencer: wcsteachhistory@yahoo.com

Populace Interview - Lady Hrefna (Willa Wylde)

Real Name:  Willa Ritz

SCA Name and Title: Lady Hrefna, but my AoA is under Willa Wylde I need to get something passed

Years in the SCA: 9+ off and on

Persona: I was trying for something Viking but I am rethinking that now that I could potentially wear something heavier than a t-shirt and not have a heat stroke! Yay for the great north!

Group or Household affiliations if any: Former Apprentice to Misstress Delphina de Champeaux, I was once a ward of the original House Firefall of Anesteorra but that house fell apart and some other house was given the same name, I was never affiliated with them nor do i know much about them.

Tell us a bit about your life outside the SCA: I have been painting, sculpting, sewing and crafting things most of my life, my mom and aunt were both artistic and taught me alot of things.  I have been doing Tech support for various places both Windows and Apple for over 20 years now.  I have also been a life long gamer, role playing, board games, card, computer etc.

What SCA activities do you participate in: Scribal guild, weaving, jewelry making, lace making

Tell us a little bit about your SCA experience (offices, etc): I started back in the late 80's in the Houston area in what was then the Shire of Loch Soillier, now a barony, I finally got my arms passed at Gulf Wars of 2012 but none of my name attempts have ever passed.  I have been the chronicler and webminister for the Loch, autocrated a couple of small events, and tried to make as many friends as possible.

What are your goals in the SCA? Make a lot of friends, learn a lot of things, maybe teach some of the things

If you could accomplish only one thing in the SCA in the year 2018 what would it be? Finally get a name approved?  Not sure that counts as an accomplishment. I would like to get back to painting illumination and branch out into other areas of A&S.

What advice would you give to a new person in the SCA, or if new yourself what question would you ask and who would you ask it of? Don't take it to seriously, there seem to be a lot of rules but most are just guidelines, it takes time to achieve the perfect outfits and gear, and if you give us half a chance we will do our best to help you get there.

If you magically woke up with an SCA talent you do not already have what would it be? Heavy fighting because they seem to be having a lot of fun and I've always wanted to be a knight or paladin even though I'm not lawful good lol.

I have really been enjoying what things I have been able to get to up here in the Hael so far.  Everyone is awesome!

Populace in focus - Lady Malleen Fenella Menzies (AKA Rivin)

A while back Her Excellency and I started a tradition of interviewing members of the populace for the blog. The goal was to slowly introduce members of the Barony, new and old, in an attempt to foster new connections. Normally, when a possible interview candidate was found Her Excellency or myself contacted them with a standard interview form, asked for some pictures, and then made a blog post. This time around is a bit different. As Chronicler it is a constant challenge to find material for the newsletter. However one member of the populace has made that job so much easier for me and that is Lady Malleen Fenella Menzies (AKA Rivin). This quiet kind woman is often seen at practice sitting at the table working on this or that. I was very familiar with her artwork and when she offered to draw things for the newsletter I quickly accepted. Recently she started on a project of creating page boarders in the form of scrolls. The finished product was amazing, but what was shocking is that when other artists started to see her work they could not believe she was sitting on such a hidden talent. So I quickly formed a plan to put her on the spot with a blog post that showcases her talents. To that end please enjoy some of the work she has done for the Barony over the past several months. I thank her for her efforts and I know we will see more from her in the future.

Look! Its Rhys Penbras ap Dafydd!

In our continuing series of "who-is-who" interviews we spoke with Lord Rhys Penbras ap Dafyddand. Lord Rhys has taken the Barony by storm with his hard work and eagerness to help, but what is his story? He was nice enough to answer a few questions for us. I hope you enjoy!

Real Name: Brandon Baranowski

SCA Name: Lord Rhys Penbras ap Dafydd

Persona: Southern Welsh, the former county of Glamorgan/Glamorganshire. I'm currently torn between 3 time periods: Late Iron Age, Early 14th Century, and Early Elizabethan.

Past Personas have included: 10th Century Danish, 11th Century Kievan Rus, & 12th Century Mongol

How long have you been involved in the SCA?  I've been participating on and off since 2002. I started in the Middle Kingdom while in college, but then, after about a year, moved over to playing Dagorhir when the local Barony didn't have the activities I was interested in. I moved to the Kingdom of Meridies in 2007, and spent a couple of years in the Shire of Rising Stone. Moved again in 2012 to the Northern Tip of Middle Kingdom and dabbled for another few years. I finally came to Æthelmearc in 2014 and actively got involved again starting with Their Excellencies' Investiture in 2015.

What activities do you participate in? While I used to be primarily focused on heavy fighting, embroidering and cooking, my interests have turned towards the operations and background activities that drive the Dream. I greatly enjoy event planning and running, and currently enjoy taking reservations for a number of events, working troll, and organizing the merchants for Ice Dragon. In the same vein, I recently succeeded THL Beatrice as the Kingdom Events Coordinator, and am working with the Kingdom Seneschal, Web Minister, & Chronicler to streamline the events submission and update capabilities on the new Kingdom website.
When I'm not working Troll, I try to put in many hours working as a retainer for Their Excellencies. It's a great opportunity to meet new people, learn new things, and lend a helping hand. I've just passed my 6-month anniversary as Barony Exchequer and haven't run away screaming, so I call that a win. Once I get past some Real Life hurdles this year, I'm hoping to break out my brushes and delve back into the Scribal Arts. I'm working with THL Zosia and Baroness Ekat on becoming a voice Herald to support our Barony during courts, and our populace when afield. I've also started dabbling in the more research and design side of the Heraldic arts, and with enough research, and practice, hope to lend a Heraldic hand to the Barony in the future. I had my first successful submission, from start to finish, with registering my own name and heraldry with the College of Heralds!

I will likely never get back to fighting (though Combat Archery is REALLY tempting), but I'm hoping to enjoying cooking, sewing, and teaching classes again in the "near-ish" future. I have a few class topics in mind already, and a stack of fabric just waiting to be turned into new garb. And ultimately, I enjoy service; service to the Barony, to the Kingdom, to the Dream. I find joy in helping others have joy, and that makes it continue to be fun.

SCA Goals for 2017:
  • Attend my first Pennsic War (even if it is only for a few days).
  • Voice Herald my first event.
  • Build new garb that reflects the culture & time periods I'm currently interested in.
  • Create at least one scroll for a Kingdom or Barony event.
  • Explore the possibilities of autocrating an upcoming event.

Meet Layla Bint Mikhael!

Continuing our series of interviews with members of our Barony, we'd like to introduce you to Layla a recent transplant from our Cousin Barony of Thescorre. Layla has been visiting the Barony's fighter practices working on A&S projects and getting to know the people of the barony while working hard on her education. We can't wait to see her at events and all that she plans to accomplish in the coming year.

Real Name: Leah Kotlarchyk

SCA Name: Layla Bint Mikhael

Persona: Officially, 9th century Khazarian.  Unofficially, I'm exploration mode.

How long have you been involved in the SCA:  On and off, for 5 years.  A cumulative 3 years of which was 'on'.

Some lovely tablet weaving by  Layla

What activities do you participate in?:  Mostly, Arts and Science.  I really enjoy making things and I'm especially fond of fiber arts.  I also love to dance and attempt to participate in dancing when I have the time.  I've recently delved a bit into archery.  I haven't had much time for it yet but I hope to shoot more in the future.

SCA Goals in 2017:  I'd like to see some kind of improvement in my abilities in the area of Arts and Sciences.  At the moment, I have my sights set on tablet weaving.  Additionally, making sure I have enough garb ready for Pennsic War.  And, of course, getting to know everyone in my new barony is on the top of my SCA to-do list!

Interview with Jenna Macpherson of Lions Tower

We are continuing our series of interviews with members of the Hael with Jenna Macpherson of Lions Tower. A fixture at local practice and events, Jenna is certainly an inspiration to all who meet her and is always a pleasure to speak with. Thank you Mistress Jenna for taking the time to answer a few questions and introduce yourself to any who might already know you (which I am sure if a short list).

Real name: Carole Goranson

SCA name:  Jenna Macpherson of Lions Tower

When did you join the SCA or how long have you been involved? October 1985 so 32 years.

What is your Persona? Persona is early-is Scottish.

Do you belong to any groups in the SCA?

I currently stand as the head of house Lions Tower in the stead of Sir Raimund of the Striat and Viscountess Angharad of the Sleeping Lion. I am also squire to Sir Angus MacBain head of House Singing Stone with his lady Mistress Yvianne. I have a protégé baron Boris Dragonsbane of house Dragonsbane and affiliate of House Highrafters and clan Kaminari.

What activities do you participate in?

Over 32 years there are very few activities I have not participated in. I have been seneschal of the Hael 3 times (2 terms each), I have been the autocrat of Ice Dragon I believe 5 times, the autocrat for two coronations, masked ball, crown tourney, and academy. I have been on staff for many local events as marshal, mol, or in the kitchens. I've been on Pennsic staff for chirurgeons and for youth combat. I have held the offices of seneschal, mol, fencing marshal, and youth combat marshal, or been deputies to those offices on the local, regional, and kingdom levels. I am most proud of my work in youth combat. In 2014 I re-authorized in rapier and authorized for the first time (at age 50) in heavy combat and have fought in 3 crown tournaments (in addition to being a consort in several others). I received a pelican at war practice in 2005 from Maynard von dem Steine and Liadain ni Dheirdre Chaomhanaigh.

Do you have any SCA goal for 2017?

For 2017 I have a number of goals in regards to my rattan fighting. I am currently being held back a bit due to knee replacement surgery in October 2016. I also have a new protégé to work with for the next year and I have some goals in mind for him as well. There are a couple office I would like to be a part of when they become available.

What advice would you give a new person in the SCA?

I would tell a new person that you can never ask too many questions. We in the SCA have so much knowledge across so many areas that the questions never end. After 32 years I find my mind still consumed with new questions as I begin new activities and new relationships. As the kingdom is growing out of its difficult teen years, there are always new avenues for participation. I have found, quite recently in fact that the only opportunity that is truly missed is the one we don’t claim for ourselves.

Meet a Newer Person in Our Barony

His Excellency and I would like to highlight a member of the Rhydderich Hael every once and awhile in our time as B&B. This time I decided to approach Vanessa a.k.a Thalia (His Excellency's Lady) and learn a bit about her and everything that she is hoping for in the Society in the future.

Real Name: Vanessa Hayes

SCA Name: Thalia Papillon

Persona: Viking

I joined the SCA as I have always have had an interest in Medieval History and everything that this involves and enjoy the experience of watching and being involved in all the medieval activities, including dance, sword fighting, and archery, and most of all, being part of a group with others who share a common interest. I joined the SCA back in December 2015 when I attended my first event which was the Baronial Investiture for the Rhydderich Hael, and then spent some time while I was still down in Virginia with a smaller SCA group, Shire of Isenfir, in Charlottesville, Virginia. I got involved with activities through the Shire of Isenfir including Renaissance dance, Archery, and Medieval game nights. I attended two other SCA events including Atlantia Kingdom Arts and Sciences and Gemutlichplatz with the Shire of Isenfir. I officially became a SCA member in October 2016 and received my blue card.

Interests in SCA:  Fencing and Archery
                              Renaissance Dancing
Other activities including attending events and trying craft related activities
                              within the SCA.

SCA Goals in 2017: Continue to improve with Archery skills
                                 Authorize in Fencing
Explore Different areas of service SCA has to offer
Get involved with helping at SCA events
Attend variety of SCA events and do Archery tournaments and Fencing
Attend Pennsic 2017 for whole week during War week

I have continued to attend SCA events during this year with my guy, Magnus De Lyons, in different areas including Pennsylvania, New York, and West Virginia to include events such as Blackstone Raids, Æthelmearc War Practice, and first Pennsic experience in July 2016.

My first real experience with Medieval reenactments was in college and I got to participate in Adventures in Midland Live Action Role play through a friend in college. This is where I just happened to meet a handsome man, Lance Kazmark, a.k.a. Magnus De Lyons, who was the leader of Adventures in Midland, and spent the next year dating Magnus and sharing times LARPing with Midland. There are still photos to this day of our time together in Midland. Through the magic of Facebook, Lance (Magnus) and I have found each other again, 20 years later, and have come together again for a second chance at love and happiness with each other.

I was so proud to join the SCA when I did, and proud to be a part of witnessing Magnus step up as the Baron of the Rhydderich Hael at my first SCA event, Baronial Investiture with his friend, Miriel Du Lac. Magnus has played a big part in introducing me to the SCA. We have attended many events together, while I was still living in Virginia, and after a year of long distance dating, I decided to move to New York and share a home with my love. I am proud and excited what I have accomplished over the past year while being involved in the SCA. I was able to achieve my interests in Archery, Fencing, and Renaissance Dancing. I was happy to acquire my first Bow and arrows from Magnus, while attending Blackstone Raids in West Virginia.

I enjoy taking photos at SCA events and capturing the experience of SCA events in photos and have been able to share these photos with others in newsletters done by Magnus De Lyons.

I continue to work on my Archery skills and have attained Archer status and completed the Iron Sails Archery tournament at A Shoote at Wyldwoode with Magnus. I have become involved in Fencing practice for the past several months now and continued with Archery to become a part of the Hael Hounds and the Barony as a whole, which has meant so much to me. I look forward to attending more events and weekly practices for Fencing and Archery. I have officially started working on my heraldry with name and device. My inspiration for my SCA name is Butterflies, which has had a lifelong meaning as my given name "Vanessa" means Butterflies.
